We'll be back on line in two weeks from Corvallis, Oregon. Let's have [ 11:37 PM, 04/08/06 ]

all Tide fans join together on the internet to cheer the ladies on if you cannot attend in person. It's going to be a terrific championship and we look forward to bringing you highlights between the rotations from Oregon State University. Roll Tide and goodnight from Maples Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University where the Tide won their 21st Regional Title and the right to advance to their 24th consecutive NCAA Championship.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles has the unique distinction of winning not only the SEC [ 11:36 PM, 04/08/06 ]

floor title four years in a row but now the regional title on floor and vault for four straight years. Wow.

[ top... ]
WVUA FM 90.7 is interviewing Terin Humphrey and Kaitlin White [ 11:31 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Kaitlin was inserted into the floor line-up for Terin and though her score was dropped she came right back and stuck her Yurchenko 1/1 vault for a 9.80, the second highest for the Tide.

[ top... ]
Alabama is now singing the fight song on top of the podium and they [ 11:29 PM, 04/08/06 ]

definitely know every word. They can now relax, have a great dinner at Buca de Beppo and then get some massages and much needed sleep before flying out first thing tomorrow morning.

[ top... ]
Team Finals: [ 11:26 PM, 04/08/06 ]

196.475 Alabama (1st - qualifies to Nationals)
195.800 OSU (2nd - qualifies to Nationals)
195.275 Stanford
192.375 San Jose State
192.050 Sacramento State
189.850 Boise State

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles and Natalie Foley of Stanford tie for 3rd in the All Around. [ 11:23 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Tabitha Yim wins it and will qualify to Nationals in the all around with a 39.525.

[ top... ]
On the floor exercise, Bama's Miles and Magee tie for 1st with a 9.90. [ 11:23 PM, 04/08/06 ]

[ top... ]
On the balance beam, Mari and Brittany finish tied for 6th position [ 11:21 PM, 04/08/06 ]

with Fee of Stanford and Ashley Houghting of Washington. Melanie Banville and Erin Rightley of Bama finish tied for 3rd on beam with a gymnast from OSU and Tabitha Yim and Terin Humphrey tie for the title on beam (9.90).

[ top... ]
Bama's Brittany Magee and Ashley Miles win the vault title [ 11:18 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and Mari Bayer is in fifth on uneven bars (9.850). Melanie Banville and Nicole Ourada of Stanford get 2nd on bars and Yim wins it with a 9.95 (with a double tuck dismount).

[ top... ]
Bama and Stanford are hugging and this is great to see. [ 10:59 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Bryan Raschilla came over with a huge sigh of relief and the Bama team is over in front of our crowd of about 30 now and doing the Roll Tide Roll cheer. It was really terrific to see how Bama pulled together on beam to get the scores they needed not just to advance but to seal the win. This helps them going into nationals, no doubt.

[ top... ]
Lamun receives a 9.65 and this is good enough to pull the team score [ 10:57 PM, 04/08/06 ]

to a 195.800. Yim of Stanford receives a 9.875 for her floor routine. She sold it beautifully. OSU's team just found out from their coaches that the scores are pretty much official and they are going to their own party! Bama's team is right next to them in the bye corral and are clapping heartily for them.

[ top... ]
Ourada gets a 9.125 for her floor routine and Lamun is trying to stay on beam [ 10:54 PM, 04/08/06 ]

desperately, but she missed a flight element and a leap series will not receive full credit for a missed connection as well. But she gets through the rest of her routine and sticks the dismount (1 1/2 twist) with legs apart but no movement. The OSU Beavers are pretty sure it's in the bag. Final scores shortly.

[ top... ]
Ourada touches down on her double pike (final pass), so the Cardinal [ 10:54 PM, 04/08/06 ]

will have to count the 9.425 on floor. Yim will finish up for the Stanford Cardinal.

[ top... ]
Pierce gets a 9.875 and Lanz just fell for OSU on one of her elements. [ 10:52 PM, 04/08/06 ]

But Ourada of Stanford also just had a major miscue on her tuck full in, jamming the landing and just touching her hands down. At least a 3-4 tenths deduction. If OSU can stay on with the final gymnast, they are following Bama back home to Corvallis for the NCAAs.

[ top... ]
Piece is through her front aerial to bhs layout stepout. [ 10:49 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Tricase opens with a double layout (on the mat), a little off center on the landing but she stands it up. Nice dive roll as she moves into the next pass where she has to jump back on a slightly under-rotated front tumbling pass (final element was a punch tuck out of a whip full).

[ top... ]
Smith gets a 9.825 for her beam routine and Pierce is up next for OSU. [ 10:49 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Foley gets a 9.85 for her floor routine.

[ top... ]
Pinchtouk receives a 9.75 for her floor routine and Smith is through [ 10:46 PM, 04/08/06 ]

her flight series and a punch front with no significant trouble. Foley on floor opens with a tuck full in, a little leg split, follows with a whip 1/2 whip full and closes with a double pike, a little hop in place to stand up the landing but overall a solid routine. Tricase is up next.

[ top... ]
Dennison is up next for OSU on beam and Pinchtouk for Stanford on floor. [ 10:43 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Pinchtouk completes her opening pass of a double pike, a front to front full to front layout, and finishes with a double twist to Shushonova straddle down onto the floor. Dennison receives a 9.775 for her beam and Tasha Smith is now up.

[ top... ]
Morales receives a 9.75 on beam to open for OSU and [ 10:42 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Fee gets a 9.525 for her floor routine.

[ top... ]
So we are in the final rotation, Stanford on floor with their destiny in their [ 10:31 PM, 04/08/06 ]

hands and OSU on the balance beam in a similar situation. And there's your first break, Kelly Fee bolts out of bounds on her opening pass (mat down as well, which may have caught her foot a bit). Angela Morales for OSU just hit her beam routine. The fight is definitely on.

[ top... ]
Bama finishes with a 49.350 on the balance beam, their highest score [ 10:29 PM, 04/08/06 ]

of the year. They finish with a 196.475 and this may be high enough to win the regional but remember, Stanford and OSU still have one more event to go. The coaches are taking the gals off the floor to regroup after a terrific showing.

[ top... ]
Terin throws a double turn in the lunge position instead of her [ 10:27 PM, 04/08/06 ]

signature triple spin but hits all of the other elements just fine, including her flight series of the full twisting bhs to bhs to layout stepout, the punch front, the switch leap to wolf, the Omeliantchik and a round off to 1 1/2 twist dismount (stuck!), for a well-deserved 9.90.

[ top... ]
We need one more routine to drop that 9.625 and Bama will be [ 10:26 PM, 04/08/06 ]

going to Corvallis. Mari received a 9.85. Terin is now up.

[ top... ]
Mari has the look of the warrior right now, all concentration and [ 10:24 PM, 04/08/06 ]

determination. She hits every element and nails the dismount of the gainer pike. Has this team grown up or what?

[ top... ]
Erin Rightley receives a 9.875 for her beam score, highest of her [ 10:23 PM, 04/08/06 ]

career. Come on Mari, it's time for another good score like bars.

[ top... ]
Erin is through her front aerial and the bhs to layout stepout is excellent. [ 10:21 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Switch leap to straddle-straddle combo looks good; switch leap to pike is perfect! She dismounts with a bhs to gainer full twist and nails the landing.

[ top... ]
They hit Ashley Miles big on the bend at the waist on the mount with a [ 10:20 PM, 04/08/06 ]

final score of 9.625. Erin Rightley is up next.

[ top... ]
Melanie receives a 9.875 and Ashley Miles completes her difficult [ 10:17 PM, 04/08/06 ]

round off layout stepout onto the beam and just stays on (bend at the waist); hits the switch leap to side straddle combo and the wolf full; gainer bhs to layout stepout and the switch leap to Korbut; she dismounts with a double twist and nails the landing!

[ top... ]
Magee gets a 9.850 and Melanie Banville is next. [ 10:13 PM, 04/08/06 ]

She is through her mount and the split full is beautifully executed. Flight series is solid, full turn, super punch front, switch leap to two straddles, nice confidence; she dismounts with a stuck double twist and Ashley Ford is cheering the loudest and Sarah and David give her a huge hug of congratulations. They know she was so disappointed over her floor routine earlier and never let her get down.

[ top... ]
Magee is through her mount and [ 10:10 PM, 04/08/06 ]

the one hand bhs to layout stepout is right on, nice front aerial, full turn leg horizontal; switch leap to wolf, perfect punch front and she dismounts with a round off bhs to double tuck, one step back. Way to start us off Britt.

[ top... ]
Here we go for Bama's final rotation. [ 9:57 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Freshman Brittany Magee will go first as she has for almost all season.

[ top... ]
Bama finishes with a 49.150 on the uneven bars [ 9:56 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and will move to the balance beam. Stanford has a 48.125 on the balance beam and will take a bye before finishing on floor.

[ top... ]
Stanford has had 2 falls on the balance beam and another low score [ 9:55 PM, 04/08/06 ]

from Ourada (touched down on the beam) but Yim finishes up well with a double twist, one hop to the left on her landing.

[ top... ]
Filetti receives a 9.775 (one judge gave it a 9.90 and was grinning for [ 9:52 PM, 04/08/06 ]

some reason while the others had her routine scored more correctly). Terin Humphrey just completed her routine and receives a 9.825 (missed two handstands, took a small hop on the landing of the double layout).

[ top... ]
Filetti stands up her routine but has a little split in the Gienger release [ 9:50 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and takes two steps back on the double front. Beautiful toe shoot straddle to the high bar earlier in the routine.

[ top... ]
Melanie receives a 9.90 [ 9:50 PM, 04/08/06 ]

We need a big performance from senior Dana Filetti and sophomore Terin Humphrey to keep the scores going up up up!

[ top... ]
Mari receives a 9.85 and Melanie Banville just redeemed herself in [ 9:48 PM, 04/08/06 ]

magnificent fashion with a superb bars routine, hitting all of her elements, including the pesky straddle back to perfect handstand on the low bar and nailing her double layout dismount.

[ top... ]
Miles receives a 9.800 [ 9:43 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and freshman Cassie Martin is up next. Martin completes her routine and adds two giant 1/2 turns before setting up for her giant to Tkatchev (left out the toe on toe off); small step on the landing of the double tuck dismount. She receives a 9.75 and Mari Bayer completes a terrific routine, highlighted by a full turn to a stuck double tuck. Way to go senior.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles is through her routine and takes a small hop on her [ 9:41 PM, 04/08/06 ]

double layout dismount but gained super distance from the bars. Huge Hindorff that followed the Shaposhnikova transition move.

[ top... ]
Stanford's first gymnast up falls on her flight series (Lauren Elmore) [ 9:41 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and Ashley Miles will wait for the sign from the judges before mounting the uneven bars to start the Tide off.

[ top... ]
Oregon State leads Bama by .025 and this is where Alabama can [ 9:39 PM, 04/08/06 ]

push the scores up but they must hit every routine to keep momentum, which is something they failed to do on the first two events.

[ top... ]
Bama's ready for their 3:30 touch on the bars. [ 9:21 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Nice double layout dismount from Ashley Miles and a pike Jaeger from Mari Bayer looked excellent.

[ top... ]
Dennison of OSU scores a 9.675 to open vault for the Beavers. [ 9:06 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Morales gets a 9.775 for her pike 1/2 twist and Yuki Lamb steps forward on her Hristakieva for a 9.850. Devecenzi receives a 9.75 for her vault even though she jammed it and stepped back towards the vault table (Hristakieva). Lanza follows with a solid Yurchenko 1/1, step on the landing, slight split in the air. She receives a 9.80. Tasha Smith receives a 9.825 for her vault (Yurchenko 1/1) which was landed again with a hop in place and she seemed to experience some pain on impact but is able to walk away. OSU scores a 48.975 on vault.

[ top... ]
Bama goes out on a bye with Stanford returning in rotation three to [ 9:04 PM, 04/08/06 ]

hit the bars while OSU goes to the vault.

[ top... ]
OSU's Tasha Smith is showing some serious attitude on the floor with her [ 8:56 PM, 04/08/06 ]

dance presentation but she loses a little effect as she lands twice on the six inch mat (opens with a double pike, hop on landing in place on the cushy mat and closes with a double tuck in the same corner). She still receives a 9.875 and the OSU team finishes with a 49.025 on floor, bettering the Tide by .150.

[ top... ]
Bama has a 97.975 running score [ 8:54 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and will now go on a bye to consider their performances before heading to their last events, bars and beam.

[ top... ]
Magee receives a 9.90 and Miles is next. [ 8:51 PM, 04/08/06 ]

She throws a super high and far Yurchenko 1/1 but hops back on the landing. Miles also receives a 9.90 and the Tide ends with a 49.100 on this event.

[ top... ]
Filetti gets hit hard and scores only a 9.750. [ 8:50 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Brittany Magee is next. Bama is giving away vital tenths by jamming landings or taking one step. There's a stick! Magee finally hit another one like she did at the Kentucky meet.

[ top... ]
Terin Humphrey comes back with a much better Yurchenko 1/1 [ 8:48 PM, 04/08/06 ]

than we saw at SECs, small hop to the left on the landing, for a 9.750. Dana Filetti steps forward on her Hristakieva, beautiful form mid-air though.

[ top... ]
Banville goes for the stick on her Yurchenko 1/1 and jams the landing [ 8:47 PM, 04/08/06 ]

a bit for a 9.625.

[ top... ]
And no one was happier for Kaitlin than Melanie Banville, who gave her [ 8:46 PM, 04/08/06 ]

the first high five. White gets a 9.800. Melanie is next.

[ top... ]
Kaitlin White, sophomore from Allen, Texas, will start the Tide off on [ 8:40 PM, 04/08/06 ]

vault with a Yurchenko 1/1. She stuck the landing, way to go! Boy did we need that!

[ top... ]
On the vault, Bama is showing the following gals to compete: [ 8:35 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Kaitlin White, Melanie Banville, Terin Humphrey, Dana Filetti, Brittany Magee and Ashley Miles. The gals must be brave and relentless to get those scores up!

[ top... ]
Stanford is at 49.050 to Bama's 48.875. [ 8:35 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Oregon State will start in the next rotation on floor and will rotate right behind Alabama throughout the evening. Interesting dynamics in development already, so stay tuned.

[ top... ]
So Bama has to count the 9.60 from White, the 9.725, 9.75, 9.90 and we [ 8:34 PM, 04/08/06 ]

will wait for Ashley's score. She receives a 9.90 to match Magee's for a 48.875 team score. Immediate pressure is now on the team for the remaining events.

[ top... ]
Ashley Miles gets hearty applause before she even starts her [ 8:31 PM, 04/08/06 ]

routine. She nails the opening pass of a double layout. What a fierce look she has on her face. Next pass is a front-front full to front layout, small hop but a big smile breaks out from Miles as she starts to dance and then prepares for her final pass, the double pike, just close to the edge on the step back to balance the landing but she's okay.

[ top... ]
Magee receives a 9.90. Melanie Banville [ 8:27 PM, 04/08/06 ]

opens next with a super pike full in and a perfect triple turn but almost sits down the punch on the second pass (front-front full to punch front tuck instead of her usual punch layout); she does touch down forward with her hands on the final pass, as she jammed the double pike landing, going hard for the stick. She gets hit hard with a 9.075.

[ top... ]
Ourada of Stanford hit a 9.825 for her vault, Sweets a 9.800 for a Hristakieva [ 8:24 PM, 04/08/06 ]

with a hop forward on the landing. Brittany Magee is now up for the Tide and opens with a 1/2 in 1/2 out, perfectly landed. Whip, whip to back handspring to soaring double pike is solid and she finishes with a terrific front through to a double full, awesome landing.

[ top... ]
Kaitlin White is up next for the Tide [ 8:21 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and hits her double pike just right! She follows with a front punch layout to an immediate Rudi, another well-controlled landing. She is really selling this routine and looks terrific out there. She will finish with a round off to whip 1/2 to what was supposed to be a whip full but ends up being a whip 1/2, a little stumble back on the final landing but she stays in bounds. That will be a deduction. And they hit her hard with a final of 9.600. Hopefully Bama can throw this score out.

[ top... ]
Erin opens with a beautiful double pike, step back but well-controlled [ 8:19 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and follows with a terrific 1 1/2 to layout stepout. She finishes with almost a perfectly stuck front-front full to front layout. Coaches give her a big hug. However, the judges are hitting the Tide right out of the chute like we warned might happen earlier. Erin only receives a 9.75. That's way harsh for that performance.

[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal receives a 9.725 for her floor routine. [ 8:17 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Erin Rightley is up next for Bama and we must have better scores.

Foley of Stanford got a 9.775 for her vault.

[ top... ]
Bama is wearing the shiny burgundy solid leo with a silver sunburst design [ 8:12 PM, 04/08/06 ]

from the neckline down across the bodice.

Ashley O'Neal starts us off, opening with a solid double tuck. She follows with a front-front full to front layout, nicely done. Straddle full to wolf full combination, some fancy dancing and then finishes with a round off to double pike, slight step forward on the landing but she had excellent height and form.

[ top... ]
So sophomore Kaitlin White gets the call early tonight to sub for [ 8:10 PM, 04/08/06 ]

sophomore Terin Humphrey. She is looking enthusiastic and pumped to meet the challenge.

[ top... ]
Here we go! [ 8:03 PM, 04/08/06 ]

On the floor, the Tide will go with Ashley O'Neal, Erin Rightley, Kaitlin White, Brittany Magee, Melanie Banville and Ashley Miles. Court Priess will be the alternate. Terin Humphrey will be held out, possibly due to problems during warm-up on the first and second pass, though she did stand them up at the end of the long warm-ups earlier.

[ top... ]
Bama and the rest of the teams are being introduced to the crowd, [ 7:53 PM, 04/08/06 ]

which is small but enthusiastic. Bama fans number about 25 right across from us, led by RaraRuss and Mari Bayer's parents.

[ top... ]
Keys to victory for the Crimson Tide: [ 7:34 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Bama starts on their two strongest events, floor and vault. They have the most difficulty of the teams present tonight on the floor and if they hit their routines, it will give them momentum heading into the vault before they have to go back out on a bye in rotation three. But Bama must be sharp, focused and enthusiastic in their presentation on floor since they are the first team up, otherwise the scores could start off conservative. The Tide also must have leadership on all events from their super elites: Banville, Magee, Humphrey and Miles in order to push the performances of the remaining team members to their highest level. This is what happened at SECs and Alabama needs to have the same strong performance here tonight at Maples Pavilion. You can bet that Stanford and Oregon State will be pushing from start to finish to secure one of the slots. So Bama cannot afford to count a mistake tonight. It's truly gutcheck time.

[ top... ]
Oregon State is looking confident on the balance beam, where they [ 7:33 PM, 04/08/06 ]

will finish the sixth rotation while Stanford is on floor. OSU's Yuki Lamb dismounts with a running 1 1/2. Chrissy Lamun is a senior and their best gymnast in terms of all around skills and elegance of execution. Tasha Smith is the dynamo who can hit the high score on floor and vault.

[ top... ]
Bama is finishing up on the beam and this will be their last warm up. [ 7:21 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Stanford moves to the floor for final long warm-ups and Oregon State to the balance beam.

[ top... ]
Nice split full jump from Melanie Banville and a terrific double twist. [ 7:17 PM, 04/08/06 ]

She really knows how to spot the ground. So does Ashley Miles. Lots of serious looks tonight on the gymtide faces as they seek to complete every move, like Terin Humphrey just then with her triple twist in the lunge position.

[ top... ]
Nice flight series right then from Ashley MIles and Erin Rightley. [ 7:14 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Mari is looking a little nervous on the beam but works through her elements and Coach Patterson gives her some feedback.

[ top... ]
Nice flight series from Terin Humphrey and the Omeliantchik was held [ 7:13 PM, 04/08/06 ]

beautifully in split position right then. Ashley O'Neal is up and running through her routine. Now all gals will go through a complete rep.

[ top... ]
The Tide is looking a bit tentative on beam in long warm-ups [ 7:08 PM, 04/08/06 ]

starting with Brittany and Melanie but they are staying at it.

[ top... ]
Bama moves to the balance beam for their final rotation (will sit out [ 7:07 PM, 04/08/06 ]

the sixth rotation on a bye). The Tide looked solid on the bars.

[ top... ]
A shout out to our loyal fans back home who are partying on the web [ 7:02 PM, 04/08/06 ]

with us as they wait for the results to come in: Salto, Salsa and Saltine, Pat Huet, Randy and the rest of the Medalist Club gang, Don and Brenda, Donna and Sam, Ms. Nellie and her cohorts, and most importantly, Rachael (hand surgery recovery), Bianca (ankle surgery recovery) and all the parents of our fantastic gym gals who could not make the West Coast trip. Let's hear a loud ROLL TIDE ROLL across about 2200 miles.

[ top... ]
Bayer was looking good on her bars warm-up until a tumble back [ 6:58 PM, 04/08/06 ]

on the double tuck dismount (never seen Mari do that) and she got a lot of teasing from the team and coaches for that. Filetti struggling a bit with the double front dismount. Miles looks strong.

[ top... ]
Nice warm-ups so far from Terin, Cassie Martin (full routine was perfect) [ 6:55 PM, 04/08/06 ]

and Banville (another perfect one).

[ top... ]
Banville, Humphrey, Filetti, Miles, White, Bayer start the warm-ups [ 6:49 PM, 04/08/06 ]

first and then Martin. Giant reps first.

[ top... ]
Bama is heading back into the arena for rotation four, where they will [ 6:42 PM, 04/08/06 ]

be on the uneven bars.

[ top... ]
Stanford is on the bars in the third rotation and Oregon State on the [ 6:32 PM, 04/08/06 ]

vault. The Cardinal is looking strong on bars with Foley, Fee, Sweets, Tricase and Yim leading the way.

[ top... ]
Ashley O'Neal is also warming up on vault and Dana Filetti and [ 6:27 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Erin Rightley are keeping the gals loose by dancing to ex gym-Tider Larissa Stewart's floor music that was playing just then for one of the OSU gals on floor. Bama will now move to a bye in the long warm-ups before returning on the uneven bars.

[ top... ]
It's 4:20 Palo Alto time. Do you know where your GymTide is? [ 6:20 PM, 04/08/06 ]

Right here warming up on the floor exercise and vault at the West Regionals on the campus of Stanford University!

Roll Tide Bama fans and welcome to the qualifying championship that will send only two teams to the NCAAs in two weeks, to be held at Corvallis, Oregon.

Right now Bama has completed their long warm-ups on floor exercise and are on the vault. They looked strong on the floor, where they hit a superb set last year during the regular season against the Cardinal. Terin Humphrey was struggling a bit on her 2 1/2 to punch front and the double Arabian but hit both nicely near the end of warm-ups. Dana Filetti is hitting her Hristakieva vaults really well in warm-ups and Magee and Miles also hit several nice Yurchenko full vault runs.
